Are you sure, you want to add Meek's Cutoff
to your wish list?
Storyline:
The year is 1845, the earliest days of the Oregon Trail, and a wagon team of three families has hired the mountain man Stephen Meek to guide them over the Cascade Mountains. Claiming to know a short cut, Meek leads the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert, only to become lost in the dry rock and sage. Over the coming days, the emigrants must face the scourges of hunger, thirst and their own lack of faith in each other's instincts for survival. When a Native American wanderer crosses their path, the emigrants are torn between their trust in a guide who has proven himself unreliable and a man who has always been seen as the natural enemy.

Sorry - I was looking forward to this for many reasons. It is one of the worst movies I've seen in years. Boring - slow - and unfulfilling in every way. The ending will make you want to get your money back. I'm just trying to warn you. Too bad, since it could have been a decent movie. The direction was so misguided.

This movie drags on and on.... If you feel you would be entertained by watching men and women of the 1800's walk through the desert and brush with covered wagons and xen for two hours straight, then this is the movie for you. Not much else happens during the whole movie, except for one scene where the leader of this ramshackle group kicks an Indian in the face. This was a violent scene I didn't need to see either. There is no ending to this movie. It just leaves you "hanging" to figure out what happens at the end of the story. I should have stayed home and read a book.
Loves good movies
My girlfriend and I went to see it based on all of the rave reviews by the film critics. It was so slow paced that we wanted to scream! The sound of the wagon wheel's scraping was the only sound for the first half hour of the movie and will haunt me for a very long time. We kept waiting for something to happen and it just kept dragging on and on and on! Even the ending is abrupt and does not satisfy. Bottom line is that this movie is going to test your patience on how much you can tolerate before walking out of a theater (we hung in there hoping things would get better but they did not :-( ). Utter waste of time.

We would have liked it if only the story goes faster with more details in pain & suffering. The sounds were inaudible, couldn't understand what Stephen Meek was mumbling about. The realistic scene with fear & desolation and the walking but failed to show their exhaustion from being on foot for months, as clothing were spanking new in mint condition. The movie didn't show seasons, no winters, no fall, no births, no poisonous snakes, no fights, no showers, no intimacy, no laughter, no heart wrenching - so slow that I can't even remember if there was any "messages" within. I know Stephen Meek made it because my husband is a direct descendant from him.

We thought this movie would never get started--that perhaps it was going to be a silent film! How much creeking wagon wheels, running streams of water, or people walking across the dusty plains with very little conversation can a person stand in one movie! It show was slow starting & s-l-o-w going all the way through. Part way through the show I checked the time on my cell phone to see how much longer I had to bare with it. Most of the characters were simple, lacking much personality. To have it be such a slow film & then to have such a dopey ending, was way too much for us. We heard others moaning about the show after it ended saying it was a waste of time. The only good thing about the show was the scenery. We think the writer/director could have done a much better job, because the basic theme was good, showing the value of women in coming out west. Don't waste your time or money seeing this one.
